Cake Smash Sessions: A Sweet Way to Celebrate Your Baby’s First Birthday
It’s hard to believe, but your little one is turning one! What better way to mark this big milestone than with a fun and messy cake smash session? 🎂✨ Not only is it a great way to celebrate, but it’s also an adorable memory to look back on as your baby grows.
If you're wondering how to make the most of your cake smash session, don’t worry! I’ve got you covered with a few tips to help everything go smoothly.
CAKE TIPS:
- Size matters: Our cake stands can hold a cake that is 8" or smaller in diameter. So, make sure your cake is the right size if you'd like to utilize one of our stands.
- Color considerations: I recommend going with a white cake—not yellow. Why? Because sometimes yellow cakes can make the photos feel a little too “tropical” and not quite the vibe we’re going for. And trust me, red velvet cake can give your baby some “vampire vibes” (unless you’re into that, haha! 😅). So, keep it simple and light.
- Icing is key: When picking the icing colors, keep it soft and light. You can never go wrong with a classic white. If you have your heart set on color, stick with pastel shades. Bold, dark icing might not be the best choice for baby’s first birthday photos. Remember, you always have the opportunity to go all out with bright colors for their cake on their actual birthday/party!
- Fondant, no thank you: Babies often have trouble smashing and eating fondant, so stick to traditional buttercream or other soft frostings that are easy for little hands to squish.
- Fluffy is the way to go: The fluffier and lighter the cake, the better the smash! You want something soft and easy to dig into. The cake should be fun for baby to get their hands into and tasty enough for them to enjoy.
- Fancy or simple? No need to go overboard! A homemade box cake with a can of frosting works just fine, and your baby won’t know the difference. But hey, if you want to go all out with a fancy cake, I’m all for it!
SESSION TIPS:
- Dress the part: Light, neutral colors like tans, beige, and cream or light pastel colors are best for the session. These tones keep the focus on your little one’s adorable cake smash moment. Plus, they look great in the bright white room!
- Don’t fill up baby before the session: If you feed baby a big meal beforehand, they might not be interested in the cake. A hungry baby will be way more excited about that sugary treat.
- Bring wipes: Things are going to get messy, and that's part of the fun! Be sure to bring a package of baby wipes to clean up those sticky hands (and face!) afterward.
- Spare clothes are a must: Babies get MESSY during the smash! Pack a change of clothes (or pajamas!) for baby to wear home when they are done with their session.
I hope these tips help you get ready for your baby’s cake smash session. It’s such a fun way to celebrate a first birthday, and I’m so excited to capture all the sweet moments!
