What to Expect and How to Prep for Your Newborn Session
Newborn photography is one of the most special types of sessions I get to do. Those first few weeks of your little one’s life are full of precious moments, and I’m so honored to help you capture them. To make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible, here’s everything you need to know about what to expect and how to prep for your newborn session.
WHEN TO BOOK:
The best time to have your newborn session is within the first two weeks of life—preferably within the first 10 days. This is when babies are still very sleepy and flexible, making it easier to get those sweet, peaceful photos. We recommend you book your session in advance while you’re still pregnant! We tentatively "pencil" schedule your session for a week after your due date. Once baby is born we adjust the date accordingly and finalize the details of your session.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE SESSION:
- Session Length: Newborn sessions usually take 2 hours. I know that sounds like a long time, but trust me—it’s necessary! Babies need time for feeding, changing, and snuggling in between shots, so we’ll take it slow and make sure everyone is comfortable.
- Baby’s Comfort is Key: The most important thing is making sure your baby is happy and cozy. I’ll always go at your baby’s pace, so if they need a break to eat or settle down, that’s totally okay. This is their time to shine, and we want them to feel relaxed and safe.
- Plenty of Poses: We’ll capture a variety of poses, including sleepy, curled-up shots, as well as awake moments if baby is in the mood! I’ll also photograph your baby in close-up shots to capture all those adorable little details, like tiny fingers and toes. I do not swaddle your baby. I focus on more natural interactions and the connection between you and your baby.
- Personalized Props & Blankets: If you’d like, we can incorporate special props, like a family heirloom, or simple items like soft blankets that complement your baby’s natural beauty.
- Parent & Sibling Photos: I always make sure to include some family shots too. These are special moments between you, your baby, and any siblings. If your other little ones are joining the session, don’t worry—we’ll make sure they feel included and have fun!
HOW TO PREP FOR THE SESSION:
- Time It Right: Before the session, try to feed your baby so they’re nice and full. A well-fed baby is usually sleepier and easier to pose! If they’re awake when you arrive, no worries—we’ll work with it and get some beautiful awake shots too.
- Dress Baby Simply: I recommend keeping your baby’s outfit simple—something soft and comfortable, like a onesie or a diaper cover. Keep the color neutral such as white, tan, beige, cream, browns etc. I also recommend bringing an extra outfit (or two). Accidents happen and we want baby to have clothing that free of any blowouts.
- Bring Extra Bottles or Breastfeeding Supplies: We will take breaks, it’s always helpful to have extra feeding supplies on hand in case baby gets hungry during the session. You never know when those little tummy rumbles will happen!
- Pack Diapers & Wipes: Newborns go through a lot of diapers, and I always recommend bringing extra just in case. Wipes are also a must, because, well, babies are messy (but adorable, of course!).
- Keep Baby Cozy: The studio will be kept at a warm temperature to keep baby comfortable and sleepy, so feel free to dress in layers. It’s always better to be too warm than too cold, especially for those tiny newborns!
- Be Ready for a Relaxed Pace: Newborn sessions are all about taking our time. I know it can feel a little hectic trying to get out of the house with a new baby, but I promise that we’ll take things slowly and ensure your baby is relaxed and safe throughout the entire session.
Newborn sessions are an amazing way to document those fleeting first days, and I can’t wait to capture your baby’s unique beauty. If you have any questions or need help preparing, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m here to make the experience as stress-free and memorable as possible!
